Charlie Gravett

Posted on: 7th July 2020

The Channel Swimming Association has learned with great sadness of the death of Charlie Gravett. The Board and all the members of the Channel Swimming Association send Sally and her family our deepest sympathy and condolences.

Mike Read, President of the CSA, says that Long distance and open water swimming has lost one of its greatest supporters, a pioneer of a number of early swims, a man with passion, who has been committed to our sport since the 1960’s and famous for being part of the first 6 man relay from Turkey to Cyprus in 1962.

When swimming itself became an effort Charlie did not leave our sport but he just concentrated all his energy into helping his fellow swimmers achieve impossible dreams as an escort pilot for the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Association. From those successes a generation of Channel swimmers emerged. Charlie, you leave a big hole, but a big thank you for everything you did for our sport.
